And the sun shone

Maisie and I went with our friends Jess and Eliot to Broadturn Farm today for our CSA pick up.

How does my garden grow...

so much of this? This is a weed we have been battling since we put the garden in this year. I don't know if it came from our compost or the environment, but it is out of control. I am certain it loves water, so this is it's lucky year, so far. Any ideas as to what it is and what to do to get rid of it? It seems that when it is hand weeded it just spreads-like "the trouble with tribbles," but not as cute.

Cold Antler Farm Fiddler's Summer update

Fiddle, n. An instrument to tickle human ears by friction of a horses tail on the entrails of a cat.  Ambrose Bierce, The Devil's Dictionary from Old -Time Fiddle for the Complete Ignoramus! by Wayne ErbsenIt helps one's ego a great deal to have a little fan that thinks every noise you make on the instrument is just grand.  I have been teaching myself to play since the beginning of June or there abouts and I have to say it is a lot of fun!  Although Ellie (a friend who is my go to person for all things fiddle-related) states my fiddle is a piece of _ _ _ _, what do I know?

Life on the farm is kinda...wet

We went to the open house at Broadturn Farm on Sunday with our friends, Kevin and Jess and their son, Eliot. It rained-alot.  It didn't seem to dampen anyone's spirits though and a good time was had.  We are CSA members.

Culinary Braveheart

Sometimes, eating can be a battle and you put your game face on to engage the cottage cheese.

Rare bird sighting in SoPo

We awoke Saturday morning to spot this on our lawn.  Obviously it is an exotic and a nocturnal migrator. It also nests in the open. Most likely feeds primarily on salt, lime and tequila. Travels with Robin(s).

Fiddle update

I am mastering the D scale which includes Joy to the World and shuffling and improvising in spite of the fact that EM said my fiddle was shit ($39 on EBAY, I'm not complaining because what do I know?).  I have managed to break a string already.  I played for Maisie while she ate her Elmo organic blueberry waffles this morning.  She loved it, bobbing and clapping along.  She is a great and appreciative audience.  This fiddle playing is a little addictive and when done well heartbreaking.

Old Port Festival

The Old Port Festival was today.  There were way too many people for the adults in our group, but Maisie seemed to enjoy herself a great deal...she listened to a jazz trio, an old time folk trio, had a strawberry smoothie, got an Elmo balloon, and saw the sights from a nice cozy, comfy backpack.  What's NOT to like about that?
Alas, the events of the weekend took their toll and the little mite went to bed without a bath, supper and with her clothes still on.  Hope you had a rip snortin' time this weekend, too.

Here Goes Nothing!

After I finished the post lamenting my lack of ability to play any musical instrument in an entertaining fashion (although Maisie does seem to enjoy my singing), I read one of the blogs I regularly follow and her post was about starting a fiddling for the complete and utter beginner contest/support group online.  So, today, my new eBay student fiddle arrived and a few days ago I got my Old-Time Fiddle for the Complete Ignoramus instruction book and CD.  I started tonight and it was not pretty.  I played on the back porch and the dog stood on the lawn and barked at me.  I have some advantage in the tutorial department as there is a group in the area called Fiddle-icious and one of our chaplains is a member.  Stay tuned. (no pun intended)
